This article demonstrates how to install/upgrade the memory in the WinBook W500 series notebook computers.

  1. Turn OFF the computer. Disconnect the AC cord remove the battery and disconnect all cables/devices attached to the notebook.
  2. Carefully turn the notebook over and lay it on a flat surface.
  3. Locate and remove the two (2) screws from the hard drive compartment cover.

  1. Remove the hard drive compartment cover. (Figure 1)
  2. Remove the single screw fastening the hard drive bracket to the compartment bay. It is not necessary to remove the four screws from the hard drive bracket. Pull the hard drive up and out of the bay using the tab. (Figure 2)

  1. Remove the ten (10) screws fastening the CPU/RAM/Wireless compartment cover.

  1. Lift the cover off and place it to the side.
  2. The RAM slots are now exposed. If replacing an existing module, gently push out on the edge clips to release the module (Figure 4 item 1), then angle the card slightly upwards and out from the slot (Figure 4 item 2).

  1. To install a new memory module, align the module with its pins towards the edge connector of the slot. In order to help you orient the module, the edge connector has been made with two unequal-length sections. You will only be able to insert the module in one direction.
  2. Holding the module at a shallow angle, insert the module into the slot. When the module is fully seated, the pins should not be visible.
  3. Press downward on the module until it lays flat. You should hear an audible click as the latches of the slot connector secure the module in place.
  4. Replace the CPU/RAM/Wireless compartment cover and secure it with the ten (10) screws.
  5. Angle the hard drive bracket into the hard drive compartment and secure the bracket to the bay using the single screw as shown in Figure 2.
  6. Replace the hard drive compartment cover and secure it with the two (2) screws as shown in Figure 1.
