NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

The WinBook XP5 Pro is equipped with an option bay that allows you to install either a 3.5" floppy diskette drive or a CD-ROM module. Depending on which drive you need, it may be necessary to swap these drive modules.

Swapping the drive modules:

  1. Save any open documents.
  2. Shut down your computer. If you are in Windows 95 click on the Start button and choose Shutdown. From the menu that appears, choose Shutdown.
  3. After computer has powered down you can remove the drive that is in the machine. Flip the unit over so that you can see the bottom of the machine.
  4. Locate the latch that holds the drive in the machine.
  5. Push this latch towards the center of the machine and hold.
  6. Pull the drive straight out of the machine.
  7. Insert the new drive module into the machine until it clicks. Make sure that the faceplate of the drive fits flush with the rest of the case of your WinBook.
  8. Power up your machine.

The computer should now recognize the new drive. You can verify this by placing a disk in the drive and then launching Windows Explorer to access the drive.

  1. I have done this and my computer does not see the drive.
  1. The first thing to try is re-seating the drive. To do this, just repeat the above process but keep the same drive instead of switching to the other module
  1. I am using the CD-ROM module and I have tried re-seating the drive module but the machine still doesn’t recognize the drive.
  1. Try re-seating the drive again. Also, be sure that you have the drive inserted all the way into the machine.
  1. Is it possible to "hot swap" the drives in my WinBook?
  1. In general, this is not possible. However, if you have the CD-ROM drive in the machine, you can put the unit into suspend, switch to the floppy drive module, and then bring the unit back out of suspend. It is not possible to switch from the floppy drive to the CD-ROM without restarting the machine.
  1. I have tried all suggestions and I still am having troubles with my WinBook drive modules. What should I do?
  1. You should contact WinBook Corporation's Technical Support Line at 1-800-468-1225. Qualified representatives are available to assist you Monday through Friday from 9am to 9pm EST.
