You have a serial mouse and you want to configure the driver that is shipped with the WinBook XP5 Pro to work with the mouse. The mouse will work in Windows 95, but when you restart in MS-DOS mode, the touchpad / trackpoint work but the serial mouse does not.

  1. With the computer powered off, connect the serial mouse and then turn the unit on and let it boot to Windows normally.
  2. Click the Start button, then click Shutdown on the menu
  3. Click on the option Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode and click the OK button. Once the computer loads the items for the MS-DOS mode, you will see a c:\>windows prompt.
  4. Insert the WinBook Windows 95 boot disk or Support Disk that was shipped with the computer in the floppy disk drive and type a: then press Enter.
  5. At the a:\> prompt type autoexec.bat and press Enter.
  6. Type 9 , and press Enter. This will install the DOS mode drivers and make the necessary changes to the autoexec.bat file.
  7. Type c: and press Enter.
  8. Type c:\drivers\mouse\mouse.exe /c1 and press the Enter key.
  9. You will be prompted to restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
  10. The next time you boot the computer, the serial mouse will be available in DOS.
  11. If you also need the mouse available when you Restart in MS-DOS mode, you will need to add the following line to the dosstart.bat file after doing the above steps:
  12. c:\drivers\mouse\mouse.exe

  13. In Windows, click the Start button, then Run and type notepad c:\windows\dosstart.bat and press the Enter key. If necessary scroll to the bottom of the file and type in the line above.
  14. Click File and then click Save to save the file.
  15. Click File and then click Exit.
  16. The next time you Restart in MS-DOS mode the serial mouse will function.
